Summer is here already but with all the uncertainty from the past few months you were not probably getting ready for sea, sand and sun. Now, with your flight tickets booked, is time to remove the dust from your suitcase and get ready to walk down the aisle again. Your mind is ready for Vitamin Sea and for long walks along the seaside and dinner al fresco. However, is your body ready for heat, water and tanning sessions? Don’t panic, our Spa Manager has shared her best tips for you to leave the country stress-free and bikini ready.

How to prepare your skin?

I would recommend a body scrub a day or two before going on holiday, or once or twice a week on regular basis. This will aid shedding off dead cells leaving the skin refreshed, brighter, evened tone and texture and much smoother. My favourite skin scrub is from Germaine de Capuccini, the oil tonic body scrub, as mentioned before, provides a deep nourishment of the skin which can be left dehydrated and dry from exposure to sun. If you can’t get hold of this product you can even make your own body scrub at home.

Create your own body scrub

  • You will need brown sugar, raw honey and lemon, as well as, one bowl and spoon for the mixture.
  • Mix  2 table spoons of brown sugar, 2 table spoons of raw honey and a few drops of lemon.
  • Mix the texture and check consistency, it should not be too thick nor too thin.
  • If you wish, add a fragrance to the mixture by adding a drop or two of any essential oils. Ylang-ylang is my favourite for summer time as it acts as a natural insect repellent, among other benefits, and can be added to your daily moisturiser to help protect the skin while on holiday.
  • The texture should be applied on dampened skin in slow circular movements using an exfoliating glove or mitt.
  • Wash off after exfoliating and apply your optional moisturiser.

For holiday skin it is recommended to use moisturiser high in Vitamin C, topped up with SPF. This home made scrub can be used both for face and body.

How to protect my skin?

The safest way to prevent the skin from sun burn is to apply a sunscreen of SPF30 or higher. It is a good idea to apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun to allow the cream to bond with the skin. If you plan on staying in sun for a long period of time you should reapply sunscreen lotion frequently, approximately every two hours, straight after you have been in the water, or if you perspire, even if the sunscreen is water resistant.

After the sun exposure you would want to give your skin a good wash but not vigorously, getting rid of the sunscreen and preparing the skin to treat it with an after sun cream. Vitamin C moisturisers are recommended to maintain a healthy and supple skin.

What to eat for a better tan?

There are different types of foods that can aid melanin production in the skin, such as carrots, red potatoes, salmon, and red fruits are a few to name. By eating healthy, drinking a lot of water and moisturising your skin you can help develop a healthy glowing tan. So the key is to prepare, protect and treat the skin.

What to do in case of sun burnt?

In case you end up with a a sun burnt skin, sponge the skin with cool water, apply soothing after sun cream, such as aloe vera, drink plenty of water and avoid direct sun exposure. Natural yogurt can be used to treat dry, sun damaged skin due to its natural soothing properties.

You are all set for the summer! Enjoy your time away and your relaxation under the sun and once you are back we have the best treatments and indoor pool for you to extend the holidays in our oasis of luxury.
