Afternoon Tea at The Landmark London: A British Institution
The History of a British Institution
The history of afternoon tea begins with the 7th Duchess of Bedford. Having complained of ‘having that sinking feeling’ during late afternoon she set about requesting tea to be sent to her boudoir in order to battle her afternoon blues. The tea was accompanied by a light snack, which later developed into sandwiches. When the Duchess later moved to Woburn Abbey in the summer she continued the tradition by sending cards to her friends inviting them to ‘tea and a walking in the fields’. This soon became a popular fashion amongst London socialites and before long many members of high society began sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon.
